Arriving a bit late in the day, we took advantage of the remaining daylight to view the amazing murals throughout Gallup’s old town. We've found almost every town along our route has an “old town”. We enjoy checking them out. They’re usually full of interesting bits of local history. Gallup's murals have been painted on walls of the town by local artists. They're retelling various aspects of the city’s history…just beautiful!
Heading to Route 66 for dinner, we had our first authentic New Mexico Mexican food. We have a tradition of eating “local cuisine” whenever we’re traveling. I mean, anyone can eat at Subway or Denny’s, right? So last night it was Virgie’s.
The big question in New Mexico is “red chili or green chili.” Every restaurant we've seen asks that question. When they say chili they mean sauce made from the two locally grown chilies. We didn't know how to answer at first so a lady we met told us to ask for “Christmas on the side”. We felt very local when we ordered it that way with tonight’s dinner
Today we drove to Santa Fe, leaving early to beat the approaching rain storm. Our timing was good...we pulled into our site just as the rain started to fall. Along our drive we ran across a group of bikers getting ready for the big ride to Washington DC. There were hundreds of them gathered at a local casino.
I learned something new when I read that this is an annual event recognizing U.S. MIA’s,.and POW’s from Vietnam as well as the many others serving to defend our country. As many as 2 million bikers have been know to attend.
Weather permitting, tomorrow we plan to visit the interesting places around Santa Fe.We heard there’s rain at home as well…yay…much needed!
Have a great day!
Pat
